We all know that holidays aren’t always easy. They are often shown as festive, warm and wonderful, but that is not the reality for many. It’s no different at The Francisco Homes. A small amount of our residents get to experience the joy of reuniting with family and loved ones for Thanksgiving. However, the vast majority are either too far away from family or after years of incarceration don’t have anyone to share Thanksgiving with. COVID-19 compounds upon this as some may not be able to join present families due to the COVID-19 risk in doing so.
Each year, on the weekend before Thanksgiving, TFH organizes a big meal for all the residents. This year will look a little different due to COVID-19, but we still plan to make sure all residents enjoy a Thanksgiving celebration. TFH staff will still be providing the turkeys and desserts but will drop them off at the homes instead of serving them to protect both staff and residents.
A former resident John noted that “if it were not for the Thanksgiving get together, then [he] would have been all alone”. His favorite aspect of last year’s Thanksgiving celebration was “sitting around and looking at all the people” gathered thinking “we were told we would never come home”, but here we are being welcomed back into The Francisco Homes community without judgment.
We are working hard every day so that our 109 residents can have an experience like John’s.
We are grateful to be able to bring some joy to our residents, but also incredibly grateful for your support. With your support we have been able to serve over 600 men since our inception in 2008.
If you have a little extra to spare to continue to help support our effort, you can do so here.
May each of you and your loved ones have a wonderful turkey day,
Organizational Development/Public Relations Manager
